Welcome to Hinsdale Haute Route the highest hut system in Colorado. Currently offering one yurt, the Jon Wilson Yurt. After being down for two years, the CTF Yurt was set up and available during the summer. However a multi day extreme wind event in November damaged the new roof cover and the yurt has been taken down again for repairs. We will not be setting it up again this winter but will focus on re-establishing the Rambouillet Yurt instead. Progress on that yurt will be posted here.
The Jon Wilson Memorial Yurt is one and a quarter mile from Highway 149. It is a great destination for families with youngsters or beginning / novice backcountry hut users.
For winter users, Wilson's close proximity to the trailhead allows groups to drive for hours, arriving at the trailhead in mid afternoon and still have time to reach the yurt before sunset.
For summer access to Wilson, the Sawmill Park road starts off steep, but is two wheel drive accesible by most vehicles, to the parking area which is located 200 yards from the yurt. If the road is wet it may require four wheel drive.
The first two tenths of a mile from Hwy 149 are STEEP gaining 200 feet in elevation. There is a slightly less steep option for hikers, snowshoers or skiers going left 25 yards or so from the start and rejoining the road near the top of the steep section.
